Either I'm an idiot and cannot see it or this definitely needs to exist. ...(without having to go in to patch and change the 3D visible option every time)

i think its not possible yet, I've created a lua plugin for this feature,
The plugin searches for the current selection and changes the 3d visible option.
The problem in my plugin is that I need a reloadUI to make the changes happen.
So I think its not possible yet 😀 but let's hope in the future..
You can ask for a feature request by your local distributor

You could just make a world without the environment and switch between that and full world. Or for more selective world use the macro world is selection.

If your 3d elements are ie with a CID 3DElements 1 thru 25, just do :
Set 3DElements 1 thru 25 "Visible3d" "" to hide
Set 3DElements 1 thru 25 "Visible3d" "Yes" to show

If your 3d elements are ie with a CID 3DElements
I would not use an ID Type that starts with a number - it can have strange side effects.

Ok Ryan, it was just an example for a workaround. In real life, I usually call my 3d elements "Decor"
